Old crafts for new and modern products

28.04.2020
Proof that beautiful things can happen in not so beautiful and joyful times is the new summer collection of strap slippers and sandals, created in Bosnian Handicrafts, within the project „Old crafts for new and modern products“, with the help of the skilled hands of women from Vogošća, who perfected their skills during a training held last November.

The collection is made of natural materials, hand-crochet upper parts, which are then attached to rope soles using the technique of "vrnčanje", and these unique models, which will hopefully be proudly worn by many Bosnian women, are packed in bags made from coffee bags. In this way, BHcrafts has once again proved that production can leave a completely clean ecological footprint, and in addition to satisfied customers, make the women who participated in the production process happy and proud of their work.

Elmedina Kurbašić is one of the participants in the training in the technique of „vrnčanje“. She says that for her, this completely new technique, represented a challenge, and the acquired knowledge, used in practice, can be a solid source of income.

Project "Old crafts for new and modern products" is realized under the Regional Programme on Local Democracy in the Western Balkans (@RELOADWesternBalkans), financed by the European Union - @eubih and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (@UNDPBiH). The project is supported and co-financed by Vogošća Municipality.

Project description:
By providing the training that is an integral part of this project, BHcrafts bring back to Bosnia and Herzegovina the traditional technique of “vrnčanje” and improves the technique of crocheting, which is also a part of tradition, to the level that can meet the requirements of the fashion industry and sophisticated market. Training in the technique of “vrnčanje”, organized for not fewer than 10 and not more than 15 women from the Vogošća Municipality, would retrain / additionally train not fewer than two and not more than five women, who will have the opportunity to learn presently very scarce and potentially very demanded and useful craft, and they will be able to do the work from home, and not necessarily just for the BHcrafts. The second part of the training would relate to the training in crocheting the upper parts of the sandals and slippers, done by special crocheting technique. In order to have at least 5 skilled beneficiaries after the training, at least 10, and at most 15 women from the Vogošća Municipality should be trained.

Project goals:
A well thought through and carefully implemented training will provide an opportunity to women of poor social status to use their acquired skills to earn money for supporting themselves instead of surviving on social assistance, and at the same time contribute that the traditional handwork techniques, which are important part of cultural heritage of BiH, are not forgotten

Target Group:
Target group of the BHcrafts are women who currently live on margins of BiH society. These are mostly women who have low education, displaced persons, war widows, single mothers, or generally women who want to earn basic or additional income.

Duration of the project:
9 months

Opis projekta:

Trajanje provedbe projekta:
9 mjeseci
