BHcrafts, in cooperation with the footwear factory Berina shoes, through the project “Traditional knitted sock – priglavak – inspiration for a trendy accessory that will make the winter evenings cosier” financially supported by Challenge To Change, intends to train a group of hard-to-employ women (provide them with additional training) in: advanced skills of knitting and crocheting; making leather soles; as well as in combining the soles with the knitted / crocheted parts into an original BiH product – house slippers that are in everyday use.

BHcrafts, as a recognized BiH brand, has been combining creativity, humanitarian work and business. In cooperation with the shoemaking factory Berina shoes from Čelić, we plan to produce a modern product for everyday use – house slippers-basing the design on indigenous BiH priglavak, as a keeper of tradition and immaterial cultural heritage in BiH. Knitted or crocheted slippers, lined with leather soles, already exist in the market, but what distinguishes this product is the use of traditional techniques of handicraft (knitting and crocheting), where the slippers (the upper parts) will present the design of traditional patterns that are characteristic of this region, and will be knitted / crocheted of 70% natural wool, and lined with leather soles in natural colour (thus eliminating the leather dyeing process and related environment pollution), while the insides will be lined by crocheted insoles made of natural wool that provide multiple benefits when worn – they allow the foot to “breathe”, they have massaging effect, and when necessary, the insoles may be washed and used again. The house slippers will be made in cooperation between the recognized social enterprise BHcrafts and the factory Berina shoes, which employs 42 women (and 4 men), and operates on the principles of a social enterprise. Three kinds of slippers (ankle slippers, mid-calf socks, and knee height socks) are already attractive to foreign buyers, particularly in Western European and Scandinavian countries that cultivate the ‘hygge ’ or ‘lagom ’ lifestyle, and value handwork.
