Hobby as Profession

Project "Hobby as Profession" is realized under the Regional Programme on Local Democracy in the Western Balkans (@RELOADWesternBalkans), financed by the European Union - @europa.ba and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (@UNDPBiH).

Project Description:
Unemployment figures in Sarajevo Canton, according to the latest data, are still high and women make half of the unemployment statistics. In today’s labor market there are few job opportunities for women; therefore, 23 years ago, Bosnian handicrafts/BHcrafts, found the possibility to engage women in work, so they can generate additional or often basic income for themselves or their households.
Since knitting and crocheting is important part of the BiH tradition, a large number of women in these areas are skillful in handicraft techniques, but the quality of their work is not always satisfying to meet the requirements of both, domestic and foreign market. BHcrafts plans to organize advanced training on traditional handicrafts skills in knitting and crocheting for at least 20 women with poor socio-economic status, in order to improve the quality of their work, with the aim of work engagement within BHcrafts production, which ensures regular monthly income for all BHcrafts beneficiaries.
Advanced training is tailored to the requirements of today's market needs, followed by manuals that are user friendly and easy-to-understand. The training of new beneficiaries will ensure work engagement for approximately 30% of participants, with BHcrafts production, providing them with regular monthly income, therefore project will also contribute to the positive socio-economic change of Vogosca Municipality.
Bosnian handicrafts/BHcrafts with more than two decades of experience working with marginalized women, combining traditional techniques and modern design, has more than 120 women engaged in work within BHcrafts production. BHcrafts is the first recognized social entrepreneurship in BiH and the only licensed Fair-Trade producer, and this project puts the needs of its beneficiaries first.

Project goals:
The goal of the project is also the mission of Bosnian handicrafts Bhcrafts - and that is, through carefully tailored training (as a form of non-formal education) in traditional handicrafts skills, to enable women of poor socio-economic background, to improve their knitting and crocheting skills so they can provide basic or additional income, through work engagement in BHcrafts production, or working independently, while at the same time contributing to the preservation of the traditional intangible cultural heritage of BiH.
After completion of the one-month training, we plan to organize a fashion show and exhibition of products that are produced during the training, and inspired by patterns characteristic for all ethnic groups of peoples in BiH. This way, we raise awareness of the tradition and cultural heritage of peoples in BiH in very attractive way!
Target group are women who currently live on the margins of BiH society; unemployed or hard-to-employ women, displaced persons, single mothers and generally women, who, using their skills, want to gain basic or any additional income to improve their living conditions.

Expected results:

  1. Organized one-month training for improving the skills of traditional handicrafts techniques - knitting and crocheting, for at least 20, and not more than 30 women from the Vogosca Municipality. Upon completion of the training, based on the recommendations of the instructors, opportunity for work engagement within BHcrafts production will be provided.

  2. Work engagement for at least 10 participants of the training, in BHcrafts production. Experience, so far, has shown that it is realistic to expect that approximately 30% of participants from the trainings show readiness and sufficient acquired knowledge and skills for work engagement in BHcrafts. BHcrafts production is organized as work-from-home which has proved to be suitable for most of BHcrafts beneficiaries.

  3. Organized fashion show and exhibition of products, produced by participants during the trainings. The end of the project is a manifestation, organized at the cinema hall of the KSC Vogosca, where participants will receive certificates on successfully completed training, and present their work in an organized exhibition and fashion show, so that the audience (primarily young people) can see that traditional accessories can be fashionable and modern.

Duration of the project:
The implementation period of the project is 8 months, starting September 2018, and ending in April 2019. The project will be implemented in Vogosca Municipality.

Hobi kao zanimanje

“Hobi kao zanimanje” čije se aktivnosti realizuju u okviru Regionalnog programa lokalne demokratije na Zapadnom Balkanu – ReLOaD (@RELOADWesternBalkans), kojeg finansira Evropska unija (EU) - @europa.ba, a provodi Razvojni program Ujedinjenih nacija (UNDP) (@UNDPBiH)

Opis projekta:
